Course info
This course will examine and compare the products of the New Literatures especially fictions written in English by authors who were born in the Asia Pacific Regions namely Australia, The Philippines, Singapore and Malaysia. The study will commence with a brief introduction on the existance of the New Literatures, their relationship with the influencial powers of the British and American that were in these regions. Studies and appreciation of these works will be on the problems possed, themes, style, technique, local colour elements and verisimilitude. These are elements that make these works unique.
Studies will be based on a few selected renowned works such as, The Tree Of Man (1955), and Riders in The Chariot (1961) by Patrick White from Australia, Noli Me Tangere by Jose Rizal, A Season of Grace by M.V.M. Gonzales, and A Blade of Fern by Edith L. Tiempo from the Philippines, The Immolation by Goh Poh Seng and Son of Singapore by Tan Kok Seng from Singapore, Scorpion Orchid by Lloyd Fernando, Twenty Two Malaysian Stories edited by Lloyd Fernando and The Return by K.S. Maniam from Malaysia.
